Applying the SIBO Test in Clinical Practice

Bacterial overgrowth can produce excess quantities of hydrogen and/or methane gas. These gases are metabolic byproducts of fermentation of carbohydrates by intestinal bacteria. The breath test measures these gases and is therefore an indirect test for SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth).
